Shopify BFCM Catalogue Audit: The 10-Point Data Checklist

On this page
Six weeks before Black Friday, a fashion retailer with 340 Shopify products ran Importier's SEO Audit export for the first time. The findings were uncomfortable: 180 products had no descriptions at all, 95 were missing GTINs, and 47 had their compare-at prices set the wrong way around, showing the cost price as the original and the retail price as the discounted amount. Every one of those 47 products was silently displaying a permanent discount that did not exist.
None of that showed up when browsing the storefront. You only see it when you pull the data.
A Shopify BFCM catalogue audit is not about polishing how things look. It is about finding the product data gaps that will cost you Google Shopping placements, filter your products out of AI shopping recommendations, and erode conversion during the highest-traffic week of the year. This 10-point checklist covers what to look for, how to run the audit on a large catalogue, and how to triage when you have six weeks and finite time.
Why BFCM Product Data Matters More Than It Did
AI-referred traffic to retail sites was up over 800 per cent on Black Friday 2025 compared to the previous year, according to Shopify's guide to product data for AI channels. That traffic comes from shopping AI agents that filter product catalogues and surface results with complete, machine-readable data.
If your descriptions are absent, your GTINs are blank, or your Google Product Category is set to "Other", the AI does not guess. It skips you.
Google Shopping has the same dynamic. Missing required attributes reduce a product's eligibility score, and a low-eligibility product gets fewer impressions regardless of bid.
Importier's pre-BFCM catalogue preparation checklist covers the broader preparation timeline from June through October. This article focuses specifically on the audit itself: how to find the gaps in your existing catalogue, assess which ones block your BFCM performance, and fix them systematically.
How to Start: Run the SEO Audit Export First
Before you look at individual products, get a data map of the entire catalogue. Reviewing products one by one in the Shopify admin misses patterns. The SEO Audit export preset in Importier pulls the columns that matter for BFCM readiness into one file.

- 01Open Importier and go to Product ExportFind Export in the Importier navigation panel inside your Shopify admin
- 02Select the SEO Audit presetThis preset exports Handle, Title, Vendor, Product Type, Tags, Body HTML, SEO Title, SEO Description, Variant SKU, Variant Barcode, and Google Product Category
- 03Apply a collection or status filter if neededTo audit a specific range such as seasonal lines or new arrivals, filter by collection. For a full audit, export everything
- 04Open the file in a spreadsheetSort Body HTML ascending to surface products with no description at the top. Sort Variant Barcode to find missing GTINs. Scan Google Product Category for blank cells
- 05Record the gap counts for each columnThis becomes your audit map and your prioritisation list for the next six weeks
With that file open, work through the 10 checklist items below.
The 10-Point BFCM Catalogue Checklist
The Checklist
1. Product Descriptions
Missing or short descriptions are the most common gap and the highest-impact fix before BFCM. Google Shopping requires a description to display your product correctly, and AI shopping agents use description text to match products against search queries.
In the SEO Audit export, filter the Body HTML column for blanks. Importier's Store Scanner identifies products with missing or short descriptions and queues them for AI generation across 18+ AI models and 7 description styles. Batch generation processes a collection in parallel; 200 products with no descriptions can be processed in under 20 minutes.
2. Product Titles
Title format directly affects Google Shopping performance. Titles that front-load the key product attribute, such as brand, material, or size, rank better in Shopping results than titles that open with "The" or a generic product name.
In the SEO Audit export, scan the Title column for titles under 40 characters, titles that start with articles or adjectives without the product type, or titles missing a key distinguishing attribute. Importier's Title Optimizer applies Google Merchant Centre format (up to 150 characters, keyword front-loaded) across a catalogue in a single batch operation.
3. GTINs and Barcodes
Missing GTINs prevent your products from participating in Google Shopping's price comparison features and reduce eligibility scores. GTIN data also helps AI shopping agents verify product identity across retailers.
In the SEO Audit export, filter the Variant Barcode column for blanks. Importier's data enrichment fills barcodes automatically for products where the barcode is discoverable from the product title, brand, and variant attributes. Products where enrichment cannot find a match remain blank; the export file gives you a targeted list to work through with your supplier or manually.

4. Google Product Category and Category Metafields
Google Shopping requires a Google Product Category for full eligibility. Category metafields provide structured attribute data, such as material, fit type, compatible devices, or storage capacity, that Shopify's product taxonomy supports and that AI shopping agents use for filtering.
In the SEO Audit export, the Google Product Category column should have a value for every product. A blank cell is a gap. Importier's 22 Industry Packs cover 3,758 category attribute types mapped to Shopify's standard product taxonomy. Applying an Industry Pack to a collection fills category metafields across the entire range in one operation. For guidance on getting those metafields to appear on the product page itself, see displaying category metafields on the product page.
5. Compare-At Prices
Compare-at price configuration is the most common source of unintentional BFCM errors. The correct setup: the Compare At Price field holds the original retail price now, and you reduce the Price field when the BFCM sale goes live. If Compare At Price is lower than Price, every product shows a permanent sale badge before your campaign launches.
In the SEO Audit export, add a calculated column. If Compare At Price is greater than zero and less than Price, that row has a pricing error. Importier's Pricing export preset isolates price columns and allows you to re-import corrected values without touching any other product data. The specific error pattern, where products appear on sale unintentionally across the entire catalogue, is covered in detail in Compare At Price set wrong during import.
The gap between a product that converts during BFCM and one that does not is often invisible on the storefront. It lives in the barcode column, the category field, and the compare-at price: data points that shoppers never see but that determine whether they find you at all.
6. Inventory Levels
Products that go live on Black Friday with zero inventory waste their shelf time. Inventory counts need to be accurate before you publish BFCM pricing, because a product showing zero available may display a sold-out state that kills click-through even where stock does exist.

This checklist point is about confirming your inventory data is synchronised with your warehouse or supplier, not just that stock exists in principle. If you are importing new BFCM stock alongside the audit fixes, the three-pass BFCM import workflow covers importing new products, inventory restocks, and pricing corrections in three separate passes to prevent fields from overwriting each other.
7. Product Images
Google Shopping requires at least one product image per product, and image quality affects click-through rate more than almost any other visual element. The minimum standard for BFCM: one clean product image per product, no watermarks, no low-resolution uploads, no placeholder images still present from a bulk import.
The SEO Audit preset does not include image columns by default. Run a separate Images export preset and sort by image count. Products with no image need one before launch.
8. SEO Handles and URL Slugs
The URL handle affects how search engines index your product pages. Handles with random suffixes ("product-1-copy-2"), numbers only, or missing the product name lose indexing signal compared to descriptive handles.
In the SEO Audit export, scan the Handle column for non-descriptive values. Handle corrections carry a side effect: changing a published product's handle creates a redirect, and old links point to the new URL. Fix handle errors now, before BFCM traffic starts and before you have links in email campaigns or ad copy pointing at the old URLs.
9. Collections and BFCM Tags
BFCM gift guides and homepage feature sections depend on products being correctly tagged and in the right collections. Common gaps: products in the right category but missing the seasonal tag, products in the wrong collection because a bulk import did not apply collection membership, or products with no vendor or type field to filter on during a sale event.
In the SEO Audit export, the Tags column shows every tag on each product. Check that intended BFCM products carry the correct seasonal tags and that products you want to exclude from sale pricing are identified accordingly.
10. Google Shopping Eligibility Fields
The Merchant Centre eligibility checklist includes fields that are often missed in a standard product data review: Condition (new, refurbished, used), Shipping Weight (required for calculated shipping), and Tax Category (required for US merchants). These fields are present in Importier's Full Shopify CSV export and can be updated via re-import without affecting other product data.

Check your Google Merchant Centre Diagnostics tab directly to see which products carry eligibility warnings. The attribute name in the Diagnostics panel maps to the column name in the import file.
Triage: What Will Cost You Sales vs Nice to Have
Not every gap carries equal urgency at six weeks out. Some gaps block your products from BFCM surfaces entirely. Others reduce performance at the margins.
In our experience, compare-at price errors are the gap merchants discover most expensively. They are invisible on the storefront until a customer emails asking about the sale they can see on every product page, and fixing 200 products with reversed pricing in Shopify's admin, one variant at a time, is a full day of work that should not happen the week before launch.
- Review each product individually in Shopify admin
- No systematic view of catalogue-wide gaps
- Re-entering data field by field
- No batch description generation
- Pricing corrections require editing each variant one at a time
- Export full catalogue data map in one file
- Sort and count gaps across every column at once
- Batch generate descriptions via Store Scanner
- Apply Industry Pack metafields to a collection in one operation
- Re-import pricing corrections with update-existing mode touching only price columns
Will cost you sales (fix first): missing descriptions, missing GTINs, wrong compare-at prices, zero inventory on launch day, and missing Google Product Category. These gaps block your products from appearing on AI shopping surfaces and reduce Google Shopping eligibility before your campaign starts.
Nice to have (fix if time allows): optimised URL handles (minor SEO improvement, high redirect risk if changed late), variant-level images (improves conversion but not eligibility), and custom SEO title and description per product (marginal BFCM impact unless organic search is a primary traffic source).
Time Estimates for Each Fix Type
Running the SEO Audit export takes under five minutes. Reviewing the output file for a 300-product catalogue takes 30 to 45 minutes if you know which columns to sort and scan.
For the actual fixes:
- Descriptions via Store Scanner: 15 to 20 minutes per 100 products, including review. The generation runs in parallel; the time is in reviewing output before pushing to Shopify.
- GTINs via enrichment: five to ten minutes to trigger enrichment across a collection. Products where Importier cannot find a match remain blank and need manual resolution from your supplier.
- Compare-at prices via Pricing export and re-import: 20 minutes per 200 products, including exporting, correcting the Compare At Price column, and re-importing with update-existing mode.
- Category metafields via Industry Pack: two to five minutes to apply a pack to a collection, plus AI matching time that runs in the background.
- Google Product Category via AI matching: depends on how many products need it. Importier's two-phase category matching fills most products automatically based on product title and type.

With six weeks until BFCM, a realistic four-week sprint covers the will-cost-you-sales items: descriptions by end of week one, GTINs and category metafields by end of week two, compare-at prices and inventory sync by end of week three, and week four reserved for Merchant Centre Diagnostics review and final spot-checks.
Key takeaways for your BFCM catalogue audit:
- Run the SEO Audit export preset first to map every gap across your entire catalogue before touching individual products
- Descriptions, GTINs, and compare-at prices are the three fixes that will cost you sales; handle optimisation and custom SEO copy can wait until after BFCM
- A 300-product catalogue with widespread data gaps is a realistic four-week project at AI generation speed, not a four-month one
- Check Google Merchant Centre Diagnostics after fixing each gap category, not before: the Diagnostics tab confirms what is actually affecting eligibility, not what you suspect
- Inventory accuracy matters as much as content quality: a perfectly described product showing zero stock converts at zero
The BFCM preparation checklist from Shopify covers the marketing and logistics side of Black Friday readiness. The product data audit is one part of that broader picture, but it is the part that determines whether your products are eligible to appear on the surfaces driving the most BFCM traffic in 2026. That makes it the part to run first.
